Wall Modeled Large Eddy Simulations of an Isolated Rotor in Hover
In order to study the degradation of aerodynamic performance due to propulsion airframe integration, a number of experiments were performed at NASA Langley in 2018/2019 using the “Straight Up Imaging” (SUI) Endurance quadrotor. These tests included experiments thrust measurements of the isolated rotor blade in order create a baseline performance that was subsequently used to quantify loss in performance due to integration with other components such as the fuselage and other rotors. Here we emulated this isolated rotor test in hover conditions using ScaLES in order to establish a second performance baseline using WMLES and served as an early validation case for ScaLES. The video shows isosurfaces of Q-criterion colored by vertical velocity for an isolated rotor in hover condition. The simulation used 825 million cells and took a couple of days on a desktop computer containing just four Nvidia RTX4090 GPUs.
